Indians scalp the Eagles

Even Dane's vest could not help pull out the win at last nights playoff game.

Very tough loss for the Eagles.

Tough loss for this blogger and Eagle fan. Friday nights will seem a little empty for the next few weeks. Sure, basketball is coming, but it is just not the same.

I won't go into great depth about the level of disappointment I have with the NCHS band director and her decision not to play at last nights game. Once again, things were off from the beginning. No Star Spangled Banner, No school song (although some talented whistlers pulled through very nicely). Hey, at least the visiting team had a band.
I can't say thank you enough to this seasons players and coaches. You provided this fan with hours of enjoyment.
August 2008 seems like so far away. I can't wait. Jack will be eagerly awaiting watching TYMAY play in his Senior year as a Newton Eagle!

Tell it like it is, Sarah Sez!!

It should have been a really exciting night, win or lose. Instead, we had to watch THEIR band make a tunnel on the field for their boys to run through. Our boys got no school song...nothing. (A big thank you to the whistlers, they were awesome!!!) But hey, at least that trailer was packed, wouldn't want anyone to have to get up early or anything.

Here's to the hotness that is Coach Fulton & Coach Short!

WOW Kelley

Pulling no punches!!

If only we would have had notice-we could have made that tunnel!

It was a sad, On-For-Newton free night at Chizevsky Field.

Given enough time and plenty of kazoos, we could have recruited enough people to have a tunnel and a half-time show.

Crap, that's a really good idea, we'll need to remember that for next year.

sarah, u know i love u. and good job this season football team.

however, i just want to say i dont appreciate the band being bashed like this. it was cold, muddy and supposed to rain, theres not much we could have done. i know that people were upset that we werent out there but it seems like no one appreciates us until we're not there.
i really don't mean anything personal i just wanted to share a band members point of view. :)

No bashing, just disappointment in the decision not to play. (Which appeared to be a decision made for the band, not a choice band members made.) Duquoin's band played for the entire game, cold and mud didn't stop them.

Make no mistake, the band is like a postman...rain, shine, snow or rain, the band is a part of the whole football experience. As long as there are players on the field and fans in the stadium, there's always a need for music. Don't sell yourself short with "there's nothing we could do". On For Newton sounds fantastic in the rain, no uniforms necessary.

I can’t help but be left in awe and wonder of your comment towards your disappoint in the NCHS band. Mrs. Alburtus always wishes the students to play whenever possible. Last year the kids sat in the band and chorus rooms for over and hour waiting on the weather to stop so that they would have a chance to play. Yes, it did look bad that Duqion had a band and Newton did not, but with the forecast given a decision had to be made. I am not sure exactly who made the final decision not to for the band not to dress and play. I am almost sure it was more than a single person’s decision. (perhaps much of the administration had a say in the matter) Based on the forecast of the weather, the band couldn’t possibly risk ruining the uniforms before the upcoming trip to Florida (I hear of no volunteers to pay for 2 dry cleanings of the uniforms.) As far as “the trailer being packed up” that is also false assumption. The trailer was not packed until Saturday afternoon….and who cares about getting up early? Apparently you have never traveled with the NCHS band. I concur with kelli with the fact that no one notices the band until they are gone. And Kelley since when did the excitement of the game revolve around a half time performance? But good luck next year with that half time show, tunnel, and kazoo/whistle feature.

Sarah D said...

Wow, looks like some feathers have been ruffled!

I guess the offended commenters are not getting it-WE MISSED THE BAND!

The band playing the National Anthem (and by the way I did not give young Miss Alburtus the props she deserved on the fantatic performance she gave singing the National Anthem) and the school song, and the halftime show is to me a HUGE part of the game and the football atmosphere and it was sorely missed at Friday nights game.

Kelley L and I are both former members of the Newton Marching Eagles and we have first hand experience of traveling with the band under the direction of Mz.D So believe me, we do know about getting up early to travel with the band and playing under poor conditions.

I can only speak for myself, but I am a huge supporter of the NCHS Marching Eagles, I have plenty of brooms and empty cinnabon boxes from the past month alone that speak for my monetary support.

Instead of taking these comments as a negative, take them as a positive-look how much the band was missed.

Perhaps Mrs. Alburtus was not the maker of the decision not to play on Friday night, and if I singled her out wrongly, I do apologize. I know in her position hard choices that not everyone will agree with sometimes have to be made.

Well Sarah, I think you've gotten some panties in a wad. Miss D isn't directing anymore?? What's that all about. I have been gone too long. What about good ole Bruce Balding? Hooray for the flag girls. We, I mean, they kick butt.

Kelley L. said...

Cancer would have marched in the rain...

Sarah D said...

BB you have been gone WAY too long!

Bruce is still twirlin' with the flags! Deb Alburtus is now the director.

Mz. D is an original. They only made one of her. She sure is a good lady. I don't think anyone will ever know how many lives she touched.

The flag girls do kick butt!

i just dont understand why the band is always second to the football team becuase people think were not as important and then everyone complains when we're not there. some people even blame the team's loss on us. maybe this should be a lesson that if u want the band then respect us. and i dont hear anyone congratulating the band on our sweep in the parade competition at oblong and that big Grand Champion trophey sitting in the office(which is the 3rd one of the season)

we cant just go out there and march in the mud, the unifroms have to be dry cleaned and, like stated before, no one is volunteering to get that done. also, we have extremely expensive instruments and equipment that can't be risked in a chance of bad weather.

all i want is a little recognition for how hard the band works and what a good job we do. there's more than just football and basketball at NCHS.

harryjohnson said...

It's probably best that the band didn't march. The rain probably would have melted all the candy in their asses!

It's just a different mindset now - I am also a former "NME" (that would be Newton Marching Eagle; just trying to have my own abbreviation like Rachel Ray). I remember one muddy, rainy halftime show on the eve of a competition where, if not mistaken, we wore our own pants and the top half of our uniforms (plus that was after changing out of a muddy cheerleading uniform, which I then had to put back ON afterward). I think the point is, you don't even HAVE to wear the uniforms - just break out those trombones and stand out there and play! And for those saying that the band is second to football, I think Sarah and Kelley and I remember the days when the football team complained that they were second to the band. Everyone has their turn in the sun - the point of marching in the rain is to show that you're all in this TOGETHER!!!

Enough of my motivational speech for the day. Damn, I wish I had some of Miss D's motiviational speeches on tape; I could really use that every once in a while.

good job on a great season marching eagles. we know you have done all you can and are going to continue in Florida. 3 Grand Champions. way to go!

heres to the hottness that is the newton marching eagles...whose their season lasted longer than the football players and who are smart enough to not stand in the rain and mud with expensive equipment.

brains. now that is true hottenss.

How did the band do in Champaign? That was always my favorite place to compete...

School Spirit starts within! Yes, the band should have been there! Yes, the band looks great this year and should have shown off their stuff at half time! SCHOOL SPIRIT IS WHEN ALL ACTIVITIES GET TOGETHER AND ROOT ON THAT PARTICULAR ACTIVITY! LET'S DO THIS!!! p.s. yes, there were people supporting the band because i had bought quite a bit of stuff this past year to help with their trip and I don't have anyone in band. hummm!

Jordan,

Since you think you are such a big boy, I invite you to reveal your true identity. I will leave your comment up for 24 hours to see if you have a big enough pair to do so.

It won't be a surprise to me when you choose not to do so. Since you seem to know it all, I guess you must be aware that these "brainless" football players and coaches you speak so highly of also read my blog. There are some members of the Newton defensive line that I doubt you would enjoy running into on any night-rainy or clear!

This is MY BLOG. If you want a place to bash the football team, or start some sort of a love fest for the NME, I suggest that you start one of your own. Those things just are not going to happen here. And if you do, please let me know, I will be more than happy to give you some free advertising.

If you do choose to comment again, please ask someone to give it a quick look over for you. Your poor grammer and all of the misspelled words hurt my readers eyes. We can't have that.

You may call the members of the NCHS football team playing in the rain brainless, I call them something else.

I call them HEROES

Is "hottenss" the new hotness? Or perhaps illiteracy is the new hotness. If "brains" is (are?) the new "hottenss", it's too bad the "brains" weren't put to good use while posting. Spellchecker, people!!

You guys think Jordan is a boy? I just assumed this whole time that Jordan was a girl. The only Jordans I know are girls.I had imagined her as a brave, yet obviously misdirected passionate soul. If he's a BOY Jordan, then he's just pathetic and cowardly. How dissapointing.

STOOPS21 left this comment under another topic-I think he meant for it to go here

Let me give you some facts about that nasty football team that the band opted not to play for.

Those boys signed a football to be raffled off with the money going to someone in the hospital.

These boys got up early and made pizzas for the athletic boosters, and the worst thing was, on their own time they went to St. Thomas and read to the lower grades.

Well, since I have put that down in writing, no wonder the band didn't play for these horrible boys.

Sarah D said...

Hey Michelle, maybe you are onto something. Jordan Zumbahlen is only 7 years old. She is a vary smart seven (it's the Diel in her) though. So if it is a seven year old that is posting that stuff-then go Jordan!

THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
In a perfect world, what goes around comes around !

jordan said...

im not bashing the football team at all. i enjoy the games as much as the next person. im just defending the band's viewpoint. i never said they (or anyone) were brainless....im sure much of the football team is very intelligent and good people.

thought i'd clear that up.

Sarah D said...

Jordan speaks!

Jordan, there really should be no band or football viewpoint to defend.

What started this all was a comment about the dissapointment in the band directors choice not to play. END OF STORY as far as I am concerned. For me, it was not a band issue at all. It was an issue of-no band playing because I enjoy the band and missed them at the game.

I feel sorry that the choice not to play was made, it was not my choice to make.

I feel sorry for the football team and most of all the Seniors that they did not get to have the entire "home game" experience on what was their last night playing at Chivesky Field. I also feel sorry for the Senior band members as they did not get to experience playing before their home crowd one last time.

I KNEW there would be interest in a kazoo band. Then again, it rarely rains inside, so the pep band should be ok..right? Is there a pep band?

Seriously, someone has to play Celebration by Kook & the Gang at basketball games...
